Our Social Enterprise of the Week:
Food Aware CIC
Food Aware help people in need, by redistributing food which would usually go to waste and giving it to those who need it most. It’s a fantastic concept that is making a real difference to people’s lives while reducing waste.
Their Vision / Mission:
Set up in 2008 Food Aware’s motto is “feed people, not landfill” and they achieve this by redistributing surplus food to deprived communities, diverting it from going to waste. Every year the UK sends 18 million tonnes of wasted food to landfill, a lot of which was still perfectly good to eat. With ‘food poverty’ on the rise, Food Aware saw an opportunity to help people in need while also reducing waste.
They work with many big-name supermarkets to save food that is rejected from shelves, purely for cosmetic reasons, and pass it on to people who are struggling to eat. Each week they manage to save between 2 and 4 tonnes of food from going to waste and help over 500 people across Yorkshire. The food they save is given to shelters, packed into food parcels and given to food banks. They also work to set up food banks in different areas so that those in need always have access to food.
Why We Chose Them:
We love Food Aware’s idea of not only helping those in need but also the environment. It seems as if today’s society has become very wasteful and this is a fantastic idea to stop some of that waste, as well as helping people who are struggling to make ends meet. We also think the work they’re doing to educate people on food waste and healthy eating is hugely important in helping people think twice about what they are throwing away.
