We’ve all had it, that stressful situation, we can feel our blood boiling. Almost certainly that will have an affect on the people around you. Hopefully, it will not be too detrimental, but just as a smile can spread throughout the world, so too can an angry burst.
I’ve been thinking a lot about how I must control my anger better, I’m a passionate person, I love football and politics and both of which I can get very… enthusiastic about! Yet, if I want to work with vulnerable people through Ground Up Digital and I cannot risk that a petulant outburst of mine will have a substantially negative effect on someone else’s day.
This was really hit home during, a recent scenario, on Tiggi’s first day at work. He saw me frustratedly scream at my computer monitor, fing and blinding. I was taken aback when I heard Tiggi say “You can tell that you’ve been working up here by yourself for a while”. He was right, I had completely forgotten that he was there. He was fine about it and laughed, but we go way back, and he knows me well enough… not everyone that we employ along this path we’re on will feel the same.
Another reason to control your anger is because it affects how charismatic we are. Role Dahl said ‘A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” Don’t believe me or Mr Dahl? In a world where we have almost unlimited methods of communicating, body language is still vitally important. Our subconscious picks up on things in a fraction of a second, and if you show your anger, even though you’re trying to cover it up, you can send confusing mixed signals to a person that which will erode any trust you have built in the conversation so far.
So, how can we reduce anger during work. Well, a client of ours introduced me to a healing CD called ENERG-eased which is a series of guided meditations. One in particular I’m a fan of is the ‘sun meditation’ this is an extremely useful technique and can be done in under a minute.
In its simplicity, you imagine that a sun is above your head pouring rays of positive light into your head. This mediation technique is so relaxing and if you practice it often can really help you balance yourself if you feel you’re tipping yourself over the edge. That’s not the only way however, if you feel yourself tipping over the edge it is imperative that you get out of the situation you’re in. Go for a walk, stand up shake yourself off, do a dance, listen to a great song that you love, whatever works for you… do it.
The next piece of advice I will give you though is the most important, stand up, put your shoulders back, stick your chest out and hold your head up high, and hold it for 10 seconds. You’ll be amazed at the change you can feel from something so simple.
I’ve got a long way to go before I perfect this, but keeping calm is becoming increasingly important to me, because it can be so hard to get down from a fit of passion when I’ve worked myself up. I’m going to keep trying and when I find something useful, I’ll be sure to share it on this blog.
