Our Social Enterprise of the Week:
Clean Start is a social enterprise established by the charity Turning Lives Around as a way of providing job opportunities to some of their clients. Turning Lives Around is a Leeds based charity which prevents homelessness and helps people to quite literally, turn their lives around. As it is often difficult for their clients to find work, TLA set up Clean Start to offer a steppingstone back into employment. Through working for Clean Start their clients can gain skills, build confidence and develop their CV. Many of their employees were once homeless and had few prospects but with the help of TLA and Clean Start they now have jobs and tenancies.
Their Vision / Mission:
Set up in 2009, Clean Start aims to tackle cleaning jobs that other commercial cleaners refuse, as well as offering job opportunities to some of the people TLA support. They provide deep cleaning, house clearance and home removals and have now expanded their services to offer painting and decorating.
Clean Start are often called in when homes have become uninhabitable or are a health and safety risk due to hoarding. They take on these jobs in a sensitive and non-judgemental way, helping clients to regain control over their home and teaching them how to maintain a safe home in future.
Many of the people Clean Start support are elderly or have mental or physical health issues which mean they find it hard to keep up with housework. The support Clean Start offers means that these vulnerable people are able to remain living independently in their own homes.
Clean Start now works with private residents, the public sector and private landlords across the region and is looking to expand its services to more locations in the near future.
Why We Chose Them:
The work that both TLA and Clean Start are doing to help the vulnerable in their society is fantastic. By offering job opportunities through Clean Start the vicious cycle that is faced by many homeless people is broken, as they are able to find employment.
Current Government guidelines mean that TLA have had to make adaptions to their services. However, this hasn’t stopped them supporting their clients and they are still going above and beyond. Face to face meetings have been moved online, ensuring people are still getting the help they need. They are also regularly posting useful information and resources across their social media channels.
The Work They Do:
Some comments from TLA’s clients:
“I am so much better and thanks to Carr Beck have a part time job at Clean Start, a social enterprise that specialises in deep cleaning and decorating.” “I have learnt that I can achieve whatever I want if I put my mind to it. It has given me the chance to live a normal life!”
“With ongoing support from my work coach, I began working full time and am now settled in my tenancy, enjoying weekends with my daughter and working hard for our future.”
“Turning Lives Around saved me. I moved into their Flagship South intensive support environment, which was temporary accommodation and started working to change my life.”
How They Align With Our Values:
We love the fact that Turning Lives Around is encouraging people to help themselves and giving them opportunities through Clean Start. Not only are they offering a great service to the clients whose houses they clean, they are also helping some of the most marginalised people in society into employment. Here at Ground Up Digital we believe that everyone deserves fair chances in life based on their abilities rather than their disabilities. This is why we try to hire people from all walks of life, who may have struggled to find employment elsewhere.
