Our Social Enterprise of the Week:

GoodGym are a social enterprise combing doing good in the community with getting fit.

Their Vision / Mission:

Set up in 2008 the founders of GoodGym saw a way to tackle two issues at once; physical inactivity and isolation within the community. They decided instead of wasting energy running on a treadmill, workouts could be incorporated with completing community actions, benefitting the health of the volunteer as well as the wider community. This innovative idea saw the creation of GoodGym, a group of runners that support their communities while getting fit. Volunteers are asked to stop off on runs to do physical tasks for community organisations or to visit and help isolated older people.

So far GoodGym members have participated in over 200,000 good deeds, helping improve their communities and the lives of the people in them. The social enterprise now operates in 58 areas across the UK and is looking to expand throughout the country and eventually the world.

Why We Chose Them:

Isolation in the older generation is a growing problem and has escalated due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Over 1 million people aged 65 and over admit to always or often feeling lonely, so having regular visitors can have an incredibly positive impact. Throughout the past year, even more people have been experiencing feelings of isolation, making the work GoodGym do more important than ever. Although they have had to stop their face-to-face meetings and group runs for the time being, their members have been busy delivering food parcels, prescriptions, and essentials to the most vulnerable. They have also been organising video and phone calls with the people they support ensuring they are coping well in lockdown.

The Work They Do:

How They Align With Our Values:

Here at Ground Up Digital we feel that supporting our local community is incredibly important. We always take the time to promote other local, small businesses and social enterprises, helping get their message out there. We also love the fact that GoodGym are inclusive to everyone as this closely aligns with our social mission of offering job opportunities to all.
