Our Social Enterprise of the Week:
OLIO connects neighbours with each other and with local businesses to ensure surplus food goes to someone who needs it and not to waste.
Their Vision / Mission:
OLIO was set up in 2015 to tackle the worldwide issue of food waste. Their app enables people to share surplus food within communities, reducing waste while also giving people who may be struggling access to free food. They also work alongside many businesses and leading supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco, redistributing food that would otherwise be thrown away at the end of the day.
UK households are responsible for over half of all food waste so creating a platform where people can share surplus food and household items goes a long way to tackling this issue. The app has gone from strength to strength and now has over 2 million users. OLIO have also recently expanded the app to include a section where people can sell their homemade food and crafts, supporting talented local makers.
Why We Chose Them:
OLIO are inclusive to all and are helping people who may be struggling to put food on the table. Their innovative app is encouraging communities to work together and support each other, while also helping the environment. A third of all food produced globally is thrown away and on average UK families waste £700 a year on food they do not use. Through the OLIO app people can reduce the amount of food and other household items they send to landfill, sharing with their local community and saving money.
The current Covid-19 pandemic has left even more people struggling financially. OLIO have worked hard to ensure they can continue the fantastic work they do throughout the pandemic and have switched to no contact pick ups on their app to ensure everyone’s safety.
The Work They Do:
How They Align With Our Values:
We love the fact that OLIO are helping the environment by redistributing surplus food to people who really need it. Here at Ground up Digital, we believe that everyone should have access to the same opportunities in life regardless of background, neurodiversity, or past mistakes. Our social mission is to offer employment to people who may have struggled previously to find work. We are also passionate about protecting the planet and try to be as environmentally friendly as possible. We have joined forces with the company Oblong Trees to become more carbon positive by planting trees to offset our carbon footprint.
