Our Social Enterprise of the Week:

Paperworks

Paperworks is a social enterprise providing work opportunities and training to adults with learning disabilities. The organisation runs as a business offering print and admin services to other companies. This provides a safe and supportive environment for adults with learning disabilities and complex needs to gain skills and confidence in the workplace.

Their Vision / Mission:

Paperworks was set up in 1994 and now has sites in both Leeds and Harrogate. They aim to provide work preparation, training and support to adults with learning disabilities, giving them the opportunity to work in a real business for real customers. Paperworks offer work placements and supply training based on the individual’s ability, so they can gain independence and experience in the workplace.

Trainees are involved in a wide range of tasks such as admin, stock taking, dispatching orders and all other aspects of running a successful business. This allows them to acquire all the necessary skills to then move on into the wider world of work if they wish. Alternatively, they can continue working at Paperworks for as long as they want, building their expertise and confidence. It’s not all about work though, as Paperworks always makes things fun for their trainees by organising exciting projects based around each individual’s interests.

Paperworks is also involved with micro enterprise Busy Bears, which is set up and run by adults with learning disabilities. All money raised from this is used to help make special memories in each individual’s life.

Why We Chose Them:

Like so many businesses at the moment, Paperworks has had to close due to the Covid-19 crisis. However, this hasn’t stopped them from continuing to assist the individuals they support. They are now supporting their trainees remotely and sending out work packs for them to complete while they are at home. These contain craft activities, ideas for exercise and things to do while in lockdown, allowing their trainees to maintain their skills and well-being at this difficult time. They are encouraging their trainees to send in pictures of the things they have been working on and Paperworks will then share them across their social media channels, keeping their sense of community going. It’s great to see all the effort that Paperworks are going to, to make sure their clients are not forgotten and are continuing to get the help they need.

The Work They Do:

How They Align With Our Values:

At Ground Up Digital we believe everyone should be offered fair chances in life regardless of background or disabilities, so we think the work Paperworks is doing is fantastic. Paperworks is helping to break down barriers for people with learning disabilities, allowing them to play a greater role in their community and maximise their potential. Often people can be overlooked through no fault of their own so it’s great to see Paperworks offering opportunities to people who may not have had access to them before.
