Our Social Enterprise of the Week:

SLATE

SLATE provide work and training opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, helping them achieve new things and live more fulfilling lives.

Their Vision / Mission:

Set up in 2004, South Leeds Alternative Trading Enterprise (SLATE) are on a mission to not only help people with learning disabilities but also the environment. Their Feel Good Furniture Shops sell upcycled furniture and household items, diverting them from landfill and giving them a new lease of life. They sell this furniture at affordable prices which benefits the whole community. SLATE have now expanded to run 2 reuse furniture shops and a caf矇, all of which offer a safe working environment for people with learning disabilities.

Why We Chose Them:

SLATE believe people with learning disabilities should have the same rights to employment, training and volunteering as everyone else. They go above and beyond to ensure their staff get the opportunities they deserve and can gain new experiences and achieve their goals. SLATEs team are able to explore different aspects of the organisation to discover where their interests lie. They gain practical skills and experience and build their confidence, all in a friendly and safe environment.

The Work They Do:

How They Align With Our Values:

Here at Ground Up Digital, our social mission is similar to SLATEs. We offer job opportunities to people who may have struggled previously to find work due to, for example, neurodiversity or past mistakes. In this way, we can help people who are facing difficulties get back on their feet. Its fantastic to find another social enterprise that shares our values so closely.

How You Can Support Them:

SLATE welcome donations of furniture, electrical items, and bric-a-brac in good condition. They will collect for free in Leeds and West Yorkshire. Find out more here: https://www.slateleeds.org.uk/donations
